Meal prep in Bogotá

Bogotá is Colombia’s high-altitude capital — a big, cool-climate Andean city with a serious culture-and-coffee scene, a cost of living well below North America, and a fast-growing crowd of newcomers. At around 2,600 m the air is crisp and the weather spring-like but changeable, and the mountains rise straight off the eastern edge of town.

Most newcomers base in the north-central barrios. Chapinero — especially Chapinero Alto and the gourmet Zona G — is the hip, café-filled favourite. Usaquén to the north is the charming, upscale district with a Sunday market; the Zona T holds the nightlife; and historic La Candelaria is the colonial old town.

Off the clock, the city climbs and sprawls — take the funicular up Monserrate for the view, wander La Candelaria to the Gold Museum and the Botero collection, and browse the Usaquén flea market. The underground Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is a classic day trip.
